..The Church teaches that parents should arrange for their
babies baptisms at the earliest possible date after birth, whether that be
one, two, three or four weeks after birth. Of course, the health and welfare of
the child and mother should be taken into account.
If an emergency arises and the
infant is at risk of dying, Baptism must be performed immediately. If there is
no time to get to a priest, then a lay person may baptize the child by pouring
water over the babys forehead while saying I baptize you in the name of the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These exact words are required for the
Baptism to be valid.
