30.    THE QUESTION WAS:

Which of the following would be an ideal time to baptize a baby?

  1. three weeks after birth
  2. three months after birth
  3. four months after birth

THE ANSWER IS….. A…..The Church teaches that parents should arrange for their babies’ baptisms at the earliest possible date after birth, whether that be one, two, three or four weeks after birth. Of course, the health and welfare of the child and mother should be taken into account.

If an emergency arises and the infant is at risk of dying, Baptism must be performed immediately. If there is no time to get to a priest, then a lay person may baptize the child by pouring water over the baby’s forehead while saying “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” These exact words are required for the Baptism to be valid.
