The established method for receiving Communion in the United States currently is standing, not kneeling. Some people call standing the “Resurrection posture.” One should bow one’s head reverently before receiving the host.

This bowing of one’s head is a fairly new guideline, so try to spread the word to your friends. If you also receive the blood of Christ in the form of wine, you should once again bow your head reverently before receiving.

Those are the instructions currently issued by the Church to which Jesus gave His authority. Once in a while, you’ll see someone genuflect before Communion and I’m sure they have the best of intentions, but it is better to be in union with the rest of the Church. It is a sign of the visible unity of the Church. If we were all separated entitities with no connection to one another, we could all do our own thing.

But Christ says we must be unified as members of one connected Body. In fact, one of the last things he prayed for on the Cross was unity.

He prayed, “That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou hast given me, I have given to them: that, they may be one, as we also are one.” (John 17:21-22)
